Student Grades Online

From School Computing

Jump to: navigation, search

Putting student grades online (securely!) can be accomplished several ways. On the most basic level many Grade Book Programs will export a web version of a class's grades which can be uploaded to school or personal web space. This works well if you only have a few teachers who are making their grades available online. Beyond a few teachers it does not work as well, since students must log in and out for each of their classes.

At this point schools usually look for a system for uploading grades that allows the students and parents one place to log in and view all the grades for all their classes. Some of these systems do more than just grades and are really full blown Student Information Systems. Some web-based grade books also allow for students to log in and view grades.

In addition to grades and comments, some systems allow for homework and assignments to be posted.

FERPAis the US federal law for protecting student information. Be sure to at least be familiar with its requirements and how this would interact with your plans for placing grades on the internet.

[edit] Open Source Software

Online Grades - Online Grades is free software for securely posting grades online. It takes exports from several popular desktop grade book software programs and gives logins for student, parents, and administrators. The software is meant to be installed and run by a school or district, though there are some teachers who run Online Grades just for their classes.

openSIS Student Information System, - openSIS is a free open source SIS that contains a feature filled grade book and portal allowing teachers to publish assignments and grades where both parents and students can view them in a secure portal online.
