ASSIGNMENT:

BASIC METHODS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING SCIENCE:

Poor method of teaching is one of the causes of students’ low attainments in science and mathematics. The teacher may acquire mastery of the contents but lacks skills in the appropriate methods. This may effects the students understanding of the subjects.

1.     Discovery method/approach: This method enables the learner to generalize from simple experiences. It is based on the same principles as the scientists’ way of work. It helps the learners gain meaningful insight into the basic structure and processes of science and Mathematics.

2.     Reception method/approach: the reception approach is also called the lecture or expository approach. It operates in a different manner from the discovery approach is appropriate and desirable for achieving certain objectives. In this approach, the students are presented with the content to be learnt in a systematic manner.

3.     Auto-instructional method/approach: this method consists of instructional materials that are prepared in step-like fashion. Each task is related to pre -specified behavior objectives. The required teaching to be done is usually programmed (in the computer). Learning from the programmed material requires active participation by the learner.

Mastering learning Method/Approach: By the name it tells us that the learner has to demonstrate mastery of the objectives at one level of a learning task before being allowed to proceed to the next. Frequent testing with corrective feedback designed to help the learner.
