Teaching methods are the strategies adopted and used by the teachers in transferring learning in a classroom of teaching learning process. It is also a techniques ,principles, the how or strategies ,that enables the teacher pass knowledge across or communicate lessons to student or learner.
Teaching method for science are as follows:
(1) Demonstration method
(2) Lecture method
(3) Discovery method.
(4) Discussion method.
(6) Field trip/ excursion.
This is a method or technique of teaching concepts principles or real thing by combining oral explanation with the handling or manipulation of real things equipment or materials. It is also a process
of audio-visual explanation on a specified idea 0r concept. The demonstration method of teaching science help to illustrate a fact or principle, visualize process that involves show the material or specimens and so on. Demonstration can serve as a review or a motivational tool to learner. There are three types of demonstration which are class demonstration, individual and group demonstration
It is the replication of demonstrated process of achieving a skill-oriented learning like science ,it is the replication of demonstrated process of achieving a skill-oriented learning like science ;it is the student request and systematic repetition of an exercise for skill acquisition and for practical in chemistry, physics and biological laboratory.
This method involves probes ,quest and search into problems a subject matter in order to arrive at the content. He asked questions and criticizes where necessary until solution are reached. Discovery learning also involves concept formation of generalisation , problem solving and creativity.
In this method , the learning is allowed to express his view on relevant issues .Discussion as a learning process implies the participation of student in the learning process by evaluating the point raised by the teacher. The students raised issues on their own and seek solution to them under the teacher’s guidance
It is a method where the teacher transmits valuable information in large form within a short time.
In this method ,the learners remain passive and only listen and take down note from as much information they could recall. The effectiveness of this method depends on the teachers verbal skill .
A fields trips is a journey outside the classroom to observe and discover knowledge in a real life situation and on the scene .It has been stated that there is no better way to discover knowledge in a real life situation than to be there on the scene, field trips enable student to have direct firsthand knowledge of operation process, life ,reality etc. In natural and functional setting.
A lesson plan is a structural period of time where learning is intended to occur .It involves one or more learner or student being taught by a teacher or instructor .Also lesson is on insight gained by a learner into a previously unfamiliar subject matter. A lesson plan is a teacher’s detailed description of the course of instruction for an individual or classroom lesson .Below is example of lesson plan that is prepared for sss 1 student.
LESSON PLAN IN TEACHING SCIENCE
METHOD OF TEACHING
DEMONSTRATION INTRODUCTION: The teacher asks the student to define apparatus and give example and the uses each example mentioned.
CONTENT: apparatuses are equipments or instrument use in laboratory to carry out chemical reactions or experiment .Example of apparatus are conical flask, evaporating dish test tube and among others.
CLASSIFICATION OF APPARATUS
Apparatus are being classified according to their uses in the laboratory ;they are classified under the following heads:
(1) Apparatus for heating: Example tripod stand ,Bunsen burner, deflagrating evaporating dish, wire gauze etc.
(2) Apparatus in which chemical reaction occur e.g. conical flask ,flat bottomed flask, boiling tube etc
(3) Apparatus use for drying example watch glass, u-tube desiccators e.t.c (4) Apparatus used as containers examples reagent bottles, wash bottle, trough
(5) Apparatus used for delivery :Examples rubber tubing, spatula, glass tube etc.
(6) Apparatus use for supporting such as boss head, retort stand, retort clamp, etc.
(7) Apparatus for weighing such as weighing bottle, chemical balance.
Step 1:The teachers explain the meaning of the apparatus
Step 2:Teachers classified the apparatus.
Step 3:The teacher gives the uses of apparatus use in the chemistry laboratory.
Step 4:The teacher ask the student to name apparatus and uses.
The teacher goes over the lesson again and pointing out the science word to make it clearer to the student.
The student are to read further on classification of chemistry laboratory apparatus and list an experiment which can be carried out on it

IMPROVISATION OF LOCAL MADE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL FOR TEACHING SCIENCE
Ten locally made material for teaching science:
1. Tripod stand --- Wooden stool
2. Bunsen burner --- Stove
3 Crucible with lid --- Small metal pot with cover
4 Test-tube holder ---- Two small wooden stick
5 Evaporating dish ----- A stainless plate.
6 Flat bottomed flask---- coca-cola bottle
7 Wash bottle ------- Small eva water container opened at the head
8. Spatula ------ Small metal spoon
9. Grinding machine ------- Mortar and pestle
10. Filler Funnel -------- Small eva water container cut at the middle and place a clean handkerchief inside.
11. Pen knife ----------- Small table knife.
